„Wine and architecture share the common goal of ageing well“
Francesco dal Co, Chefredakteur Casabella, Mailand

Since the opening of the Dominus Estate Winery in California’s Napa Valley by Herzog & de Meuron in 1993, hundreds of wine producers around the world have commissioned internationally renowned and regionally respected architects to convert, expand or indeed build new wine architecture. Architecture is now increasingly a part of a winery’s identity-forming image.

As awareness of the role and efficiency of ambitious architectural projects for businesses has grown, an increasing sensitivity has in turn developed among Italian winegrowers. Since then, the historic holdings of many wine estates have undergone a continuous “rejuvenation” process: wineries are increasingly opening up to interested parties with the offer of numerous oeno-gastronomic events. Visitors can now view fascinating extensions in many places, not to mention new buildings and revitalisations, all in dialogue with the landscape.

The exhibition Aging well. New wine architectures in Italy invites visitors to take a journey through Italy, from South Tyrol to Sicily. Alongside the exhibition’s 11 selected wineries, the so-called Osteria dell’Architetto (Architect’s Tavern) forms a lively meeting place at the very interface between wine and architecture.
